But tomorrow, oh tomorrow, Mayor Keith Summey will be presenting news that North Charleston is in the Top 10 of something else. And we’re assuming it’s good because they’re holding a press conference. Oh, and they’re calling it a “recognition.”

With all of the primary votes finally cast, the S.C. Conservation Voters sent out a press release patting themselves on the back for supporting winners — everywhere but in the Lowcountry.

“Conservation Voters believes that elections are an opportunity for voters to choose what direction South Carolina will move in and Republican and Democratic voters have been very clear that they expect elected leaders to take action with respect to clean air, water and energy,” said Executive Director Ann Timberlake.

The Primary and Runoff elections added two “pro-conservation” votes to the State Senate, bringing Conservation Voters within three votes of a majority of Senators consistently voting for policies that promote a safe, clean and healthy South Carolina.

In the House of Representatives, Conservation Voters continues to need 12 additional members consistently voting pro-conservation to attain a bipartisan conservation majority.

Among the local races:

Senate races:

Dwayne Green, D, Charleston Senate #42 - LOSS

Sen. Clementa Pinckney, D Jasper Senate #45 - WIN

Sen. Catherine Ceips, R, Beaufort Senate#46 - LOSS

House races:

Rep. Heyward Hutson, R, Dorchester House #94 - LOSS

Clay Middleton, D, Charleston House #111 LOSS

Joe Bustos, R, Charleston House #112 - LOSS

Thayer Rivers, D, Jasper House #122 LOSS

Stu Rodman, R, Beaufort House #123 - LOSS

I should note that Sen. Pinckney is the kind of legislator who will have his seat until he decides he doesn’t want it anymore.

Girls at one Massachusetts high school are getting pregnant at an alarming rate (17 this year compared to two or three last year). Officials were first concerned that there was some sort of pregnancy pact, with each encouraging the others to get pregnant. Turns out not to be the case — these girls were just careless and uneducated.

While there are legal and social requirement that try to protect youngsters from becoming sexually active too early, here are our top three ways to know you’re not ready:

1. You still have an allowance.

2. “Your song” is by either the Jonas Brothers or Miley Cyrus (that is what the kids are listening to these days, right?).

3. You’ve never put a condom on a banana.

During the Charleston RiverDogs’ current five-game homestand, Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park will serve as an official drop-off point for non-perishable items to help benefit the Cedar Rapids Flood Relief Fund in the mass flooding that has occurred in the Midwest.

Ever had someone tell you that you just had to join MySpace or Facebook or MyBook or FaceSpace because everybody’s doing it?

Well, the same can be said for the new trend of political candidates throwing out those dame “Three. Words. Period.”

You’ve seen them. It usually goes like “Strong. Honest. Leadership.” Or maybe it’s “Experienced. Tough. Fair.” It’s as if you just can’t describe the candidate in two words and four is too much.

One could argue that Obama has two words: “Change” and “Hope.”

John McCain debuted his “Three. Words. Period.” on Tuesday: “Reform. Prosperity. Peace.”

I’m sure I’m not telling you anything you don’t already know, but these three words in particular strike me as odd coming from the GOP candidate — the Washington staple calling for an extension of the existing tax policy and ongoing involvement in Iraq is running on “Reform. Prosperity. Peace.”?

I mean, I don’t want to knock the guy, but run on your strengths. Don’t highlight your weaknesses.

Clay Middleton is trying hard to pull a comeback win in the District 111 race. Charleston City Councilman Wendell Gilliard pulled in 46 percent of the vote, but it wasn’t enough to win the seat outright. He’ll be facing Middleton in a run-off election on Tuesday, June 24.

Middleton, well aware that it’ll be difficult to overcome his deficit, has challenged Gilliard to a debate. Getting more face time in the district and in the press is key in both attracting new voters and getting his folks back to the polls.

Gilliard told the Post and Courier that he hasn’t been invited to a debate. If he had, he’d likely decline. The potential loss of voters disappointed in the lack of a debate is minimal at this point. And Middleton’s excitement for a face-off suggests he sees it as a step up and Gilliard knows better than to offer a ladder.

What Middleton needs to do is what he’s likely doing — shaking hands like nobodies business and hitting community meetings and church groups. Bring up the lack of debate by questioning whether Wendell Gilliard is already taking the district’s voters for granted.
