More barriers need to be in place. Physical and psychological. Make those kids watch Baby Borrowers and they will be traumatized by what these teens go through as 'parents.'

Mac Pick Palin Veep BEFORE Hil Campaigns w/Obama!

In addition to her overwhelming attraction on the oil/energy issue and the female/disaffected Hillary voters, her human interest story will generate millions and millions of dollars worth of publicity and media coverage — essentially free to the McCain campaign — more than offsetting Obama’s reported money advantage.

Comment on Middleton Presses for Debate; Gilliard Knows Better by marilyn

I first met Clay Middleton in May of 2005, just after he had returned from his tour of duty in Iraq. A year. An entire year in that awful place, yet the dove in me was able to respect him for what he had done - serve my country in a way that I myself never could. The more I talked with him, the more I respected him. I remember the next day at work telling a good friend, "One day we're going to see Clay Middleton's name on a ballot. I just feel it." I never dreamed that one day would be in 2008!

I feel that I know Clay. His opponent? I know only his reputation. Wendell Gilliard has been in the public eye for many years. In fact, before I became a part of the Charleston community, I knew him only from what I'd read in the papers and seen on TV - an activist who takes pride in thrusting his personal agenda and morals upon the citizens of Charleston. I watched in dismay when he hounded young college students about enjoying Marion Square, a public park for public people. He spent so much valuable city council time on a personal issue; I think he's the only person who rode by that square just to see how many students were sunbathing. It would have been so much easier if he'd taken another route, wouldn't it, and saved us all a lot of grief?

I'd run into Clay from time to time since that first meeting, helping him with a community education project, seeing him at state and local Democratic party functions, running into him at various campaign events in the Lowcountry. Clay always made a point to speak to me wherever and whenever our paths crossed. Though Mr Gilliard and I worked closely together on another campaign last year, I still have to introduce myself to him each time we meet.

I was not a bit surprised when Clay Middleton told me early this year that he was going to run for South Carolina House Seat 111. I thought it to be perfect for him. He was reared and educated right here in Charleston, not just elementary and high school, but college as well. For anyone to do well at The Citadel proves there's something special, something uniquely strong about a person.

When the time came for me to decide who to support in the District 111 race, it was a no-brainer. Would it be the man who loves having the cameras pointing to controversy or the man who doesn't beg for headlines, the man with integrity and vision?

They say past performance is indicative future success. I've compared the past performances of the candidates in this runoff.

I'll cast my vote for Clay Middleton's performance.

Thanks for this piece Greg.

Another consideration is this: When Eugene came before the Green Party to seek our nomination he did so without foreknowledge that he would win the party nomination. Indeed, since the South Carolina Green Party votes by consensus, meaning that 100% of the people must agree or stand aside for the party to nominate a state level candidate, Eugene could well have lost our nomination. If he had lost it, by the state's reasoning, his name would not have appeared on the primary ballot. No party can be given control over another party's ballot line, and this is what the state appears to want to do.

Most importantly though is this question: What serves the voters of the 115th District the best? Move voices and choices in November, or less democracy for the voters in the low Country?

Paul makes a good point. Especially considering that, had Eugene won the Dem nomination, his name would have been on the ballot multiple times (for the Working Families, Dem, and Green parties) but since he lost one, he can't have any.

This interpretation of this law would seem to imply that if someone lost their attempt to get the Green nomination, they'd be disqualified from getting the Democratic or Republican nomination. Why should one party's decision's prevent another party from getting the candidate of their choice?

I am confused...The title refers to HIV but the article refers to hepatitis c and HIV. I believe someone has made an error. Hepatitis C may be abbreviated as HCV (Hepatitis C Virus). Whereas, HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus)refers to the virus that cases AIDS. Both are reportable diseases by the CDC but HIV is considered an STD whereas HCV is not. In addition, they are separate and totally different diseases. While it is true that both can be contracted through blood to blood contact HIV can also be found in other body fluids such as semen and saliva whereas Hepatitis is NOT. Neither should be a concern in a school setting however and making other students aware of another child's status if infected does nothing more than serve to expose that child to undue stereotyping and emotional harm at a time when it is hard enough to be child in the public school system. Nevertheless this mistake should be corrected regarding terminology especially considering the article is about ignorance in understanding the disease. Thank You, K.Phelps, RN, BSN, HCV Advocate & Survivor

I also learned yesterday from a reliable source that in Dorchester Co, when people went to the election office to vote early and asked for the Democrat ballot, the election office clerks responded with, "Are you sure? Are you sure you don't mean the Republican ballot?" or "Really? Do you really want the Democrat ballot?"

So we know where some of Linda Ketner's votes went, thanks to the high professional and ethical standards of the Dorchester County Election Commission.
