Chamber Hosts Hassle Your Legislator Reception Tonight
November 20, 2008 – 11:18 am
To be fair, most attendees won’t be hassling. The two-hour event begins at 6 p.m. tonight at the South Carolina Aquarium. The cost is $75 at the door.
The Chamber presents its annual Legislative Reception with more than 330 local, state, and federal elected officials have been invited. This event gives the community an opportunity to [...]
District: Consultant Brings Results
November 10, 2008 – 11:27 am
Last week, News 2 did a story on a $1,200-a-day consultant the district was using to improve high school instruction and student performance. The story apparently omitted explanations by the district regarding exactly what consultant Sandy Brossard does. I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that the district feels that information was intentionally left [...]
UPDATED: Is There A Consultant To Help Principals Answer Questions?
November 7, 2008 – 5:10 pm
News 2 asked Charleston County high school principals why they were spending $1,200 a day on consultant Sandy Brossard. Other than stressing that this woman is paid for through state or federal tax dollars, not local tax dollars (um, last we checked it was all still coming out of our pocket), we still have no [...]
Conservatives Lose Second Shot at Controling Charleston Schools
November 6, 2008 – 12:21 pm
Charleston County’s tepid pro-district majority likely has a bit more solvency now that final election results are in. With five seats on the board to fill Tuesday, voters threw out persistent spoiler David Engelman and denied a run by conservative John Graham Altman.
The results put Arthur Ravenel’s hope for a conservative direction for Charleston County [...]
Five Races to Watch
November 4, 2008 – 12:20 pm
1. McCain vs. Obama
Yes, we know this is “McCain country” and all that mess, but both the New York Times and NBC News have reported the race is tightening in South Carolina. We have every expectation McCain will win, but it will be interesting to see how well Obama does here in Charleston County. Area’s [...]
NY Times Covers Charleston Test Score Scandal
October 31, 2008 – 9:12 am
Our little bit of embarassement just went national as the investigation into suspicious test scores at Sanders Clyde and the surprise exit of former principal MiShawna Moore gets ink in the New York Times. What’s most distressing about the story is that it shows that it doesn’t take an investigation to find the truth. You [...]

Rex Calls for Four-Day School Week, Reduced Testing
October 15, 2008 – 10:35 am
State agencies were told to look in every nook and cranny to find a little extra money to make up for the state’s $500 million shortfall. Education Superintendent Jim Rex was, by far, the most inventive.
His requests, announced Tuesday, were:
–Changing state laws that prohibit more cost-effective school calendars, such as eliminating the state’s minimum 180-day [...]
Candidate Drops Out of School Board Race
September 15, 2008 – 4:34 pm
The racism card is off the table.
In the contentious school board race for the seat representing the peninsula, the NAACP and others were claiming charter school organizers were supporting a black and a white candidate in hopes that the black man, Marvin Stewart, would syphon off just enough of the black votes to ensure the [...]
Sanders-Clyde Shocker
September 10, 2008 – 11:53 am
Charleston’s gem among troubled schools appears to have been a fraud, as the school district calls for an investigation of startling test scores once thought “improbable” by observers that now seem like they may have been impossible.
Diette Courrege lays out all the clues in a sharp story in today’s Post and Courier.
I can remember when [...]
