There could be more than two dozen superdelegate endorsements for Barack Obama by the end of the day. And they all started with Congressman Jim Clyburn this morning.
“Today the [primary] process ends,” Clyburn said in the “Today” interview. “And I hope that enough of us will announce our intentions today so that this evening our candidate, our presumptive nominee, can get to 2,118.”
And from Time:
If (Obama) wins only half of today’s two remaining contests in Montana and South Dakota that puts him 26 delegates away and, as Karen noted earlier today, there looks to be a rush of superdelegates who will endorse as soon as polls close. Clyburn alone could carry with him many of the as-of-yet undecided House members who’ve been waiting for the House leadership to make a move.

Can we talk about local politics?
I have read your paper and seen some small blurbs in it regarding the county council district 6 race between Curtis Bostic and Nancy Cook. There are a few issues which I have not heard mentioned by the press any where which I think should be of interest to West Ashley voters. Although, I will admit that I have a bias in this race, I would beg you to consider making West Ashley voters aware of what lies beneath the surface regarding these candidates. I have heard Nancy Cook speak several times, and she has bashed her opponent regarding his attendance and has made other critisicms, some totally inaccurate, some perhaps partially true. However, I have not heard Curtis mention any negative regarding Nancy’s track record, so I have done some research on my own into her political career as well as her personal responsibility.
- Ms Cook has been publicly reprimanded by the State Ethics Commission for failure to follow campaign disclosure requirements. (Case ID: JG10 2001 002325, http://www3.charlestoncounty.org/surfer/form/emulator/55_esl3187013422_-1107905514)
- Ms. Cook has had multiple court judgments against her for failing to pay her creditors. (See Engel v. Cook, Case ID CP10 1990 004535, Provident Finance & Mortgage v. Cook, JG10 1991 000316 http://www3.charlestoncounty.org/surfer/form/emulator/55_esl3187013422_-1107905514, one case dismissed or settled Berkeley Services, Inc SC87 2001 001200)
- Finally, in Ms Cook’s eight years on the Charleston County School Board, the Board has raised taxes by 45%. While she was on the school board, it sued to raise the tax cap so that our taxes could go even higher! What do we have to show for Ms Cook’s leadership and the added tax burden? 26 Failing Schools in the last reporting period (Post & Courier, May 24, 2008). See also the School District’s report card, http://ed.sc.gov/topics/researchandstats/schoolreportcard/2007/District/D1001999.pdf
“Donation suggestion raises a red flag,” Post and Courier, Saturday, May 12, 2007 reported that a committee which had been appointed by Ms. Cook appropriated funds to the Good Neighbor Center, an organization headed by Ms. Cook. In fact, The Good Neighbor Center received more funds than any other organization. In the article, Ms. Cook implies that the $50,000 appropriated the previous year had allowed “up to 15 children” attend summer camp. Let’s see, that’s $3,333 a kid.
A review of the campaign filings for both Ms. Cook have come from outside of the Charleston area with the exception of one. The largest contributor, Community Educaton Partners, Inc out of Nashville, Tennessee is apparently a company that has a contract with the school board. Nancy’s campaign is funded by vendors? I would be curious to hear her explanation of who the other out-of-state people are.
Nancy has been rebuked by the NAACP for her suggestion to sterilize single mothers on WTMA’s am morning show April 3 (see http://www.naacp.org/news/press/2008-04-08/index.htm).
I would like to hear what Ms. Cook’s responses are to these items.
