George Will puts him in the top three in regards to gubernatorial options.

South Carolina’s Gov. Mark Sanford, 47, is more of a maverick than McCain, and Sanford faults his state party for being insufficiently conservative. His frugality has had him at daggers drawn with the state Legislature, which Republicans control. His populism is an acquired taste — he should not have lugged those two live pigs into the Legislature to express his disapproval of pork — but he favors expanding school choice, eliminating the state income tax and, at the national level, reforming entitlement programs.

A McClatchy piece takes note as well.

Mark Sanford: The South Carolina governor is a vibrant conservative with a record of fighting spending, but he wouldn’t add a state to the McCain column, because McCain should carry South Carolina anyway.

The Post and Courier also has a story today about the potential candidates for Sanford’s spot in 2010, but it also makes reference to the looming Vpstakes.

The race won’t kick ito the next gear until after November’s election, unless Sanford is tapped as a vice presidential running mate. Then all bets are off.

But I think it’ll take an actual win in November for “all bets to be off,” and who would place that bet?
