Lots of zeros and ones burning today over the comment from Huckabee in the New York Times Magazine this weekend where he jokingly asks, “Don’t Mormons believe that Jesus and the devil are brothers?”
Was it a dig at the evident confusion of the voting public about the Mormon faith? Yes. Was it a serious attack on Mitt’s faith? No. The underlying problem with any Mormon joke is that there is still tons of confusion about the Mormon faith. I wonder how many reporters and readers actual had to stop and look up whether or not the Mormons actually do believe that the two were brothers. As much as I can figure from a minute-long search, it appears that they’re brothers in the loose sense that we’re all children of God of varying degrees.
The problem for Huckabee is that he wants to have that same dry, charming sense of humor that John McCain has. The problem is that we reporters and the general public have been hearing McCain’s jokes for eight years. When he calls a student “a little jerk,” he expects us to go along with the joke. When he turns World War III into the missing verse of “Barbara Ann,” we’re supposed to think its clever … well, he doesn’t knock every one out of the park, but there is a sense of levity in it all — not panic.
When Huckabee says something clever during a press opp, the next question from the pool is always, “Are you serious?” At which point, Huck looks shaken and has to put the car in reverse and run over the quip. It looks like he’ll have to keep following each joke with “Obviously, I’m joking” until the crowd catches on.

Huckabee wasn’t joking. There’s nothing in the article that said he was at all. Huckabee is schooled in the hate literature against Mormons. That hate line is so old, it’s pitiful. He shows up at rallies against Mormons (see Judge report). Huckabee hates Mormons and your just trying to cover for him. Probably because deep down, you really don’t want to know what Mormons actually believe, you just want to believe the worst. While you are at it, why don’t you blame Romney for not being “real” just because he’s a caring person who doesn’t try offend people. The only thing real about Huckabee is how mean spirited he is to people of other faiths. Next up: Huckabee: “Didn’t the Jews kill Jesus?”
The biggest problem with Huckabee’s comment, was that it shows him contradicting himself. Not long ago, when asked about Romney’s religion he stated that he didn’t know much, and that Romney would be the best person to ask.
So I wonder with Huckabee, which is it.
Bravo David! I agree with your comment. Huckabee intended to insult and exploit the Mormon faith. For being a preacher, he surely has a lot of hatred to share. I find him to be a “snake in the grass” since he uses his religion to trick and mislead people. Plus, who made him God’s spokesman, and God’s candidate?

Mike Huckabee is clearly living 200 years in the past when Cristians of all faiths were all struggling with which church represented Jesus Christ. The fact is most Cristian faiths are spinoffs of the Catholics which brings into question authority. The Church OF Jesus Christ is not a spinnoff of any Church but rather a restored church. Catholics believe they have authority through the Apostile Paul and Mormons believe authority was lost when the apostiles died and therefore must be restored by devine intervention. Fact is, Mormons are very much Christians in the purest sense. Huckabee simply needs to question his own beliefs based on the aforementioned.
I think Huckabee may have shot himself in the foot. Being anti mormon helped him out in Iowa, but what he forgot to take into account is that mormons vote too, and are generally very conservative voters, and he has recently offended a lot of them with his comments.
I am still deciding. But is seems to me that Huckabee is a slick politician. He positions himself as the anti-Romney candidate - I am more of a Christian than you; I play a bass guitar and you don’t; I support McCain in NH because he supports me in Iowa and we don’t support you (although when McCain supported Romney for Governor he said “he is a man of integrity… a role model for the youth of America”). Huckabee continues, I never earned a Masters degree and you did; oh yeah, and because I never stuck in there and got my Masters degree I never achieved the American dream like you. He makes a lot of sense for someone that doesn’t want a prosperous America!
He will fire 115,000 IRS employees and put hundreds of thousands of tax experts out of jobs. For comparision, the US only added 43,000 jobs in November of 2007. Huckabee is not smart for the economy.
He wants to tax the very internet access you are now using to read this message! No to Huckabee who wants a tax on everything.
We are NOT all children of God. A lot of satanists would argue vehemently against this statement. Christians are by definition a group of people who believe that Jesus Christ is God. God descended into a human body and lived as a man with human beings to express the Plan of God … the miracle of the resurrection experienced by all Christians through spiritual rebirth, by faith. Mormons believe Jesus Christ is an exalted human being who attained godhead just like every Mormon ‘attains godhead’. However, when asked if they accept the Bible as the sole authority of the Plan of God, the Mormon will say “No.” They believe the Book of Mormon and the Pearl of Great Price have higher truth value than the Bible. The reason for total confusion about Mormon belief arises from the total confusion at the core of Mormonism.
i totally disagree with the mormons i beleive in the The Holy Bible and that there is a father son and holyghost. Jesus died for us and we should worship him for it. And when he comes back i will spend enertity in heaven. john smith was not God on Earth. Jesus was.
