James Island animal doc Thomas Sheridan is back in the press, this time in a story from DVM magazine, a vet industry publication that looks at South Carolina’s recent decision to release the details on vet complaints prior to actual hearings. Sheridan has been dogged by accusations of bad medicine and lost his job at the South Carolina Aquarium this past spring when the facility decided to hire a full-time vet. The new DVM story really doesn’t get into more details on Sheridan’s story, but notes the information on complaints is now more easily accessible to the public, thanks to the state’s Vet Board.
“From the veterinary perspective, if the complaint is not made public, it protects them in the event that there is a frivolous complaint filed or one deemed to be without merit that does not need further investigation,” Atkinson says. “The negative aspects of releasing the information would be the disclosure or exposure of a complaint. Then, perhaps, the media will write about it, and the veterinarian has to defend himself or herself, yet we don’t necessarily have a final disposition of wrongdoing.”
But should state boards be concerned about protecting veterinarians, or their animal patients?
Unless complaints are made readily available to the public from the time they are filed, pet owners may have no way of knowing they exist. “If there are pending complaints against a veterinarian, I as a consumer want to know, even if they are not public at that point,” Atkinson says.

Sheridan HASSLED???? I think NOT!!! He has managed to dodge complaints in the past - it’s going to get really interesting NOW!! He still faces a disciplinary hearing continued from May 3rd.
“the information on complaints is now more easily accessible to the public, thanks to the state’s Vet Board.” The thanks definately are not due the SC Vet Board! Marcia Rosenberg - single handedly (with support from Sheridan’s victims and others) got out there and fought and lobbied for change in the law! The SC Vet Board did had NOTHING to do with this change!
This is ridculous! Does the owner of the bird not have enough sense to not carry a bird around while she is cooking?! Dangerous for the bird AND unsanitary! Why was her negligence not an issue? The poor bird should never have been injured in the first place.
What does the bird have to do with the context of the article anyway??? Take a moment and read all the information on sheridantruth.com. Sheridan is a psycho - take your animal to the Folly Road Animal Hospital and hope and pray that you and your pet are not on the receiving end of HIS BAD DAY!!!
I want to tell my story about the horrors I witnessed as a kennel tech at Dr. Sheridan’s office.
He has threatened to sue me once for Slander on yahoo.com Comments.
Can someone please advise me on what to do.
I think I need to talk to a lawyer.
Sarah - TALK TO A LAWYER!!!!! Sheridan has MENTAL ISSUES as proven by his order to Anger Management by the SC Veterinary Board. He is still telling the old tale that he is a “victim” due to disgruntled employees! PATHETIC! The Truth can be seen on the website dedicated to his HORROR!
Sarah–I can only urge you to tell your horror stories of Dr. Thomas Sheridan. Too many animals have already been harmed or killed by this abusive veterinarian and if you don’t come forward, more and more animals will die. Please tell your stories to the South Carolina Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners. You should also go to the Charleston television stations and newspaper. They have already heard many stories, so this won’t be a surprise to them. Perhaps they can help warn people in the area so that animals lives will be spared. You should also reach out to the people listed on the very informative website that is out there listing many of Tom Sheridan’s previous victims.
